At Carlota, we understand that every traveler arrives with personal expectations and a unique way of experiencing the world. As a sustainable design hotel in Quito’s Historic Center, our vision is to offer a thoughtful and refined hospitality experience that respects the city, its heritage and the environment. A House Is Built

The historic house that now hosts Hotel Carlota is built in Quito’s Historic Center, becoming part of the city’s architectural and cultural heritage.

1905

A House with Many Lives

Over the decades, the building serves different purposes — including a school and later the headquarters of Ecuador’s Conservative Party — before becoming a private residence once again.

1950s – 1960s

Carlota’s Home

Doña Carlota Echeverría de Moreno acquires the house and makes it her family home for more than 40 years, filling it with life, stories and memories.

1966

Quito Becomes a World Heritage Site

UNESCO declares Quito’s Historic Center a World Heritage Site, recognizing its cultural and architectural value to the world.

1978

A Vision Takes Shape

Renato Solines and Verónica Reed decide to preserve and restore the family home, envisioning a sustainable design hotel that honors Carlota’s legacy and the city’s heritage.

2011

Restoration & Design

A complex four-year restoration process takes place, led by architect Verónica Reed and her team at VIVAARQUITECTURA, integrating sustainability, adaptive reuse and contemporary design.

2013 – 2017

Hotel Carlota Opens Its Doors

Hotel Carlota officially opens, offering an intimate, design-driven and sustainable boutique hotel experience in Quito’s Historic Center.

2017

Recognition for Restoration

The Municipality of Quito awards Hotel Carlota for the Best Intervention in the Historic Center, recognizing the quality and impact of the restoration.

2018

Pan-American Architecture Biennial Award

Carlota receives international recognition at the Pan-American Architecture Biennial for restoration and adaptive reuse.

Carlota was born from the vision of transforming a deeply personal place into something meaningful for the city. The restoration of an early-20th-century heritage house — rich in memory and character — gave rise to a sustainable boutique hotel where history and contemporary design are in dialogue.

The project embraced a clear challenge: preserve the architectural and emotional essence of the space while giving it new life through thoughtful, modern design. Warmth, legacy, and identity became the soul of the hotel.

Grounded in architecture, design, and sustainability, the development was guided by a strong commitment to local culture, community, and environment. Through adaptive restoration, responsible reuse, and reflective design practices, Carlota became a place where heritage, hospitality, and environmental awareness converge.

More than a hotel, it is a living house that honors memory, activates the present, and projects the future.

Carlota’s social spaces are designed to be enjoyed throughout the day as places for pause, connection, and experience.

The main patio is the heart of the house — bright and open, ideal for rest and conversation. The rear patio offers a quieter, more intimate setting for reading or calm moments.

The reading room provides a serene space for personal time. Bistro 626 brings the culinary experience to life with daily breakfast and contemporary local cuisine.

The terrace overlooks Quito’s Historic Center and offers signature drinks and light bites in a relaxed atmosphere above the city.

Each space is meant to be experienced — not simply passed through.
